Chicago Marathon 2022, Meredith and Robert are coming for ya!

First off, we are the two most unlikely runners and never ran a day in our lives except for maybe when we were forced to in gym class in high school. So how did the running journey begin and why the heck did we sign up for the Chicago Marathon?

Let’s start with how we became a running duo.

One day back in 2016, I downloaded an app to help me train for a 5K. I told my Dad about it and he replied he’d join me. It started with running for a couple of minutes followed by walking. I can still remember the first time we ran a mile straight without walking and how excited we were. I thought to myself “How are we going to do this 3 times in a row to run a 5K?!” Well here we are now, ready to train for our first marathon after numerous 5Ks, 10Ks, a 15K, 10-miler, and five half marathons!

So why did we commit to a full marathon?

Running a marathon has always been in the back of our minds as we have progressed in our running career. Since a marathon is obviously not going to be easy we both felt that running with a charity that meant something to us would be both inspiring and motivating. We decided to finally take the plunge and are excited to run for Jack's Team!

Running for a cause – Melanoma Research

A little bit about our relationship with Jack's Fund: I grew up in Glen Ellyn, where my parents still live, and went to school with the Marston family. (Jack Marston is who the organization is in honor of.) My family participated in their first This Run's For Jack 5K in Glen Ellyn and has participated many times since then. More recently I have participated, along with my dad, both with and in honor of my coworker and friend, Lydia Carbonara. Lydia lost her battle with melanoma on November 13, 2020. Lydia was a wonderful friend and one of the most amazing people I have ever known. I miss her every day, and I am honored to run, with my best running buddy by my side, in her honor.

We hope to raise as much as we can in Lydia's honor for an organization that was important to her. Just a small donation will go a long way to helping us meet our goal for the Jack H Marston II Cancer Research Fund.

Since the risk of melanoma affects or has affected each and every one of us, the work that Jack’s Fund is doing to increase research funding and to develop awareness programs is so important! For more information on the work Jack’s Fund is doing go to www.jacksfund.org.
