Dear Friends and Family:
Did you know one person dies every hour from melanoma?
I certainly didn’t, and I’m not sure the people around me were aware of it either. At least not until very recently, when we lost our beautiful Georgie to this horrible disease.
Sure there’s many of us who have felt they’ve come close to understanding what Melanoma actually is, and what it does. But the reality is that my generation at least, is at times oblivious to the dangers it poses, and perhaps more importantly, the work that needs to be done to find not only a cure, but also to put in place more effective measures of diagnosis.
As an Australian who grew up underneath the sun the effort toward prevention, treatment and diagnosis of this disease takes even more import.
It is also a deeply personal mission for our family, given the sadness we carry around each day that we’re all desperately trying to convert into positive energy. I feel this is the way Georgie would've wanted us to live our lives.
That’s why I decided to make my Berlin Marathon more meaningful and support Jack H. Marston II Melanoma Fund. Their campaign to fund research and provide awareness programs (early detection saves lives) makes a real difference --- and you can be a part in it. Please read their mission and vision statements.
A marathon is also a bloody long way ! So please give generously there is a good chance we will need your inspiration at some point during those 26 or so Miles.
